Movement for Health Coalition Meeting
Date: Tuesday 17th September 2024 10am – 12.15pm

- Podcast Movement through conversations- there will be 8 episodes and the first series (November) is already decided. The second series (February 2024) will give coalition members an opportunity to shine a light on their work. An email is coming out to meet and discuss what to showcase.

Upcoming events
- Change Mental Health and University Glasgow to join the coalition
- SPARC Emma is on the development committee for the SPARC conference so looking for any physical activity research you wish to share by September 29. You can find a guide for abstract submissions on their website and they are looking to embrace practitioners to balance academic research. Registration is open and it costs £38 per head in Edinburgh on November 20th. https://www.sparc.education.ed.ac.uk/registrations-2024/
- ISPAH (International Society for Physical Activity and Health congress) conference France 28th – 31st October 2024 – Emma represent Scotland along with “We’re undefeatable” from England – this global network will be looking at movement across the globe, what works well, showcase and learning – she will share what she learns through a podcast episode and feedback to these meetings
- We’re looking for ideas for events for next year
- Sophie will be main contact for coalition going forward
3. Coalition member update Versus Arthritis (Kelly) – Lets move which is funded by sport England ends next year so looking at sustainability and how to evolve and deliver across all four nations of the UK.
- Scotland – delivery around self-management, information talks, training volunteers to go out as peer support, which is a is very important part of what they do - looking for suggestions and ways to work together/share training.
- Inequalities in Glasgow, new resistance band exercise sheets (available on versus Arthritis website).
- Community days – physios at local community centres to share ideas and learning. If you’re interested in working together at these then the Scottish team would be interested.
- Work showing impact over last 6 years. Upskilling others vols
MS Society (Tracey) - Major transformation physical ability using the good boost app had a soft launch – funded by sport England. Will feed back once know what doing
Breast Cancer Now – (Darren) – Pilot of 3 years train the trainer health promotion to train local Health Care Professionals around Breast Cancer awareness. They expect physical activity to be high on agenda.
- recruiting volunteers to deliver talks on awareness
Scottish Disability Sport (Josh) – Queen Margaret College survey due out next month sent to SQA for changes to physical activity courses increasing reference to disability/ para athletes.
- next year national exhibition 14th June Stirling University on disability sport. You can come and try all ability health walks and education opportunities, comms due out next couple weeks.
- National championships attendance is limited by travel so looking for solutions to increase numbers.
CHSS (Fearghas) –Moving Matters program – wish to expand this program, currently 1 instructor who offers a mix of virtual and in person interviewing so advertising two new positions to expand include condition specific classes of 12 week programme of pulmonary rehab.
- Increase engagement with NHS colleagues then expand to other conditions
- Walking for health partnership with walks and training.
- Working on increasing volunteering

Age Scotland (Rebecca) – Body Boost Bingo continues to roll out and is very popular at train trainer/taster etc if interested book on website.
- Wellbeing flower – interactive activity includes movement (website) range of organisations.
- OU take 5 to age was well just received more funding May – pledge to improve H&W includes paper based resources.
- OCT pilot HMP (prison) focus group with inmates to create events looking to expand to other groups
Paths For All (Emma) – We have 2 new direct delivery teams – one in workplaces and one in schools – so the organisation has now expanded to about 54 staff. The new teams are working with the Regional Transport Partnerships to get more people walking - they will hopefully come along to present to coalition to see how can be involved
- National Walking framework – MFH involved writing/drafting
- Autumn Step Count Challenge, you can register your teams now for a start of November 4th for 4 weeks - early bird discount runs to the end September
Grayling (Lena) – parliament general election July meant a change in govt and therefore changes to Health Agenda – looking for more personal experience in NHS and Scotland so building new relationships.
- Scottish Government are looking at early intervention and community care .
- Finance still not good but will hopefully improve after another year or so budget 30th Oct Scottish Govt Budget 4th Dec Scottish govt now minority in Parliament

4. Post-conference check-in (Emma Anderson PfA)
- From our conference in June, a place to gather feedback and discuss what would be useful for the next event.
- On the day and follow up email being analysed and will take time to pull together.
- Next year focussed on events based on themes from feedback
- Check in on impact and feedback from academics/workshops etc and Emma will send something round
5. Mapping Report Check-in (Sophie Brown MfH) Discussion. Please read the Mapping Report in advance. Challenges of coalition and celebrate successes. Looking to streamline
- Recommendations from mapping report very useful for comms teams/messaging/websites
- Sophie will collect who in your organisation is the best person to send next survey to, Mapping report survey/data collection should be quicker than last year and she will initiate this as an annual exercise with more information to follow.
- MOVES tool – health economics development tool to show impact through numbers , e.g. NHS Grampian for every £1 spent saved £8 so this is powerful tool for funders etc - propose a session on what/how , what data to collect and how can be used. Rebecca interested.
ACTION ALL: Please provide Sophie with name of best person to be involved ie whoever deals with evaluation Sophie to set up a webinar with Paul Kelly to explain MOVES tool
6. My Movement for Health Campaign (The Ideas Club)Ideas club – create the digital content My movement for Health campaign
- Movement Wall – this was done at the MFH conference so we added our own “My Movement for Health is ????” in handwriting to make it personal – these will be shared on the MFH social media
- Discuss building more assets and potential webinar with communications teams to discuss how to use and when? Who is best in your organisation to continue the MFH message? Ideas Club will Possibly run a webinar/presentation on this with a specific ask
Kelly – comms teams time is precious so pulling them together eg webinar, be specific about what we want (the ask)
- Opportunity to return to what was previously discussed for the members area, (reflect on suggestions from last meeting). What do you want in this area? What would be most useful and why? Do a separate session on the webpage live tutorial and discuss what could come next
7. Strength & Balance (Zoe Niven PFA) Presentation. - Zoe will be presenting an introduction to PfA’s Strength & Balance programme. Recorded and slidesDiscussion ensued about partnerships/sharing resources and possibility on specific session on this.Emma will share the Slides from this
8. Communications check-in (Sophie Brown MfH) Reminder to send Sophie updates for monthly newsletter Discuss frequency of these meetings – twice a year in this format and other opportunities to meet eg events/webinarsHow are you using our communications and is there anything missing you would like built in? Work planning 24/25 – coalition task groups (Emma Anderson MfH) Review and discuss structure for subgroups. Groups: CommunicationsCommunity of Practice PolicyEvaluationSpecial interest groups (women’s health, how/where MfH can influence system, priorities from gov’t may direct new task groups)
- Add in task group definition
- Initially this needs to be lead by MFH (Emma and Sophie) – tasks will come from Advisory group
How involved do you wish to be with the delivery in these groups? Draft a formal agreement for how these will look moving forward.
