Movement for Health Coalition Meeting

1. Welcome from the Chair (EA) – 10 am 

  • Housekeeping and scene-setting for the meeting.

2. Introduction and Coalition member update – 10.05am – 10.25am 

Introduction and quick fire updates from around the membership to keep on top of developments across the sector and any opportunity for cross working.

Mark Gaffney Scottish Disability Sport – National Survey completed with Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh at end 2024 and now working with focus groups. They are holding a National event at University of Stirling to release key findings on June 14th 

Fearghas Thomson CHSS – staff for movement matters program – have 1 new member of staff in the East covering Edinburgh and the Lothians for face to face classes.  Walking Health Walk coordinator Jaq has left (will be missed) so now recruiting 2 new replacements for East and West and part of the North they will also be recruiting a North coordinator to increase the walking reach in the North

Robert Nisbett SAMH – launched their new strategy this month which will highlight their focus for the next 3 or 4 years. Jo Anderson has moved onto MS society.  Announced research following on from their menopause work, which is aimed at different life stages will look at younger audiences.  This is being done  with Edinburgh University and PHS and will focus on building Mental Health literacy across Scotland through sports clubs.  Also Find your team campaign will now focus on older people.

Rebekah Ballantyne ageing well – The prison intervention they’d been working on was completed 2 weeks ago and is  being written up to include physical movement and she’s happy to share when it’s done. “Take five to age well” event which was run in September 2023 in collaboration with Open University and age UK https://www.ageuk.org.uk/derbyandderbyshire/about-us/news/articles/2023/take-five-to-age-well/ -  is being taken to by support groups in paper based format to their community groups where they will ask people to pledge to make small healthy changes. 

Kieran Scott and Jamie Scott Change Mental Health –  Contributed to the MFH podcast which is out at easter, won best service for wellbeing in Highland Region, advocating for early intervention and prevention at a parliamentary event, looking at a  best practise report for late spring.

Gill McShea PFA – SHWN now has approx 350 members.  Focusing on what the Network is and needs to be.  We have a graduate trainee doing some mapping work (similar to the MFH mapping exercise carried out by Sophie last year), looking at where the SHWN fits into the physical activity referral pathway .

Conor Mclean Public Health Scotland – PHS finalising annual 25/6 plan using a systems based approach , they are initially looking at how to implement this in 5 or 6 Local authorities for now. Collaboration with SAMH and Edinburgh University Physical Activity referral standards tiered system to improve understanding, also work with MFH to improve pathway through referrals, research urban disease report around walking and mental health, CMO physical activity update for 2029 work starting now.

Tejesh Mistry VHS Scotland – new strategy 2025 onwards – here is a link for stakeholders survey, please take time to fill this in– free membership model to diversify voice. Darren Lander Breast Cancer Now – strategy by the end 2025 for next 5 years, train the trainer team recruited for greater Glasgow and Lanarkshire offering face to face courses and online self-directed learning pilot in these areas launches in August.

Tracey Harrison MS Society – soft launch of new strategy till 2029.  Through transformation, still in fact finding stage, to be applied 2026.  Planning an MS event 30 May include physical activity .

Updates from Movement for Health (Emma Anderson Movement for Health) – 10.25 – 10.30am

MFH Emma – back to one member (Emma) have DO post vacant.  MFH is to be involved in CMO UK guidelines review process, also on Active Scotland delivery group, now moving into agreeing actions and dividing them up so MFH members can play a role in this, particularly minor movers to counteract the data showing 3000 deaths in Scotland caused by sedentary behaviour, looking at triage so hope to pick up those who are missed, possibly create a sub group to look at this. Series 1 of podcast is live so please share, series 2 is being filmed at the moment. Series 3 will include minor movers, people living with chronic conditions and this will be a highlight for the Day of Movement planned for the 18th June 2025. 

A reminder to send Emma any updates that are to be shared wider and these will be included in the MfH monthly updates.

3. Day of Movement – 18th June 2025

Introduction from EA - The when and the why.

After conference which will happen every two years to give us time to look at the learning from conference.  In interim year will have a couple of smaller events to look at specific items so if you have a topic you wish to discuss let us know.

Still wanted to make a splash! To highlight movement of minor movers

Today’s discussion about what was achievable/messaging

There will be an assets pack designed for the membership to use to support the day and celebrate the movements of all people living with long term health conditions.

Ideas

Group discussion facilitated by Ideas Club. The ideas and feedback will go into creating an ideas bank for the membership to use. Including, songs, images, film reels, wording and capturing experiences to share.
